Partnering with the University of Maryland Intramural Officials Program

As a part of our New Referee Development Program and effort to create a regional pipeline of referees, MWSRA launched a partnership with the University of Maryland (UMD) Intramural Officials Program at the University’s flagship campus in College Park.

  • UMD intramural soccer is officiated by current UMD students only. This is a great opportunity for younger MWSRA referees who enroll as undergraduate or graduate students at the University of Maryland to continue being a referee, not only in the region, but conveniently on campus. Intramural referees do not have to be USSF-certified, though referees who maintain their certifications can continue to work MWSRA-assigned games as well.
  • Current intramural referees who remain in the greater DC area have the opportunity to continue working as a referee in the region at the same time and after you graduate. MWSRA offers a range of competitive youth, high school, and adult matches and mentoring to further hone your skills. The fast-paced and fun environment of intramural officiating will serve you well with other leagues, including:
    • Youth and adult recreation games and tournaments (typically weekends and evenings)
    • Regional high school matches (typically late afternoon/evening on weekdays)

Once you become certified to referee, you will be eligible to officiate a range of recreational and competitive leagues across Prince George’s County, Montgomery County, Howard County, and Washington, DC. While these are not in College Park, pay is typically higher.

MWSRA is here to help you grow as a referee – whether you are in high school planning for college, a current Terp looking for more opportunities, or a graduate of the University of Maryland who wants to continue as a referee.

Current referees, prospective referees, and parents who want to learn more about this partnership should contact Matthew Popkin, MWSRA’s Director of Referee Development (and UMD graduate), and Claire Bolster, MWSRA’s U-25 board member and former UMD intramural official supervisor.
