Since each game is different, veteran referees and new referees benefit from doing a common-sense, pre-game that sets expectations and covers key topics for your crew or even yourself. Check out the MWSRA Pre-Game Checklist to cover the basics and help you prepare for each game!
- Arrive at least 15 minutes prior to kick off and allow time for a pre-game with your referee crew.
- Make sure you and your crew are dressed professionally and are not conflicting with team colors.
- Walk or warm-up around the field and inspect the goals. Be purposeful with your actions because perception matters – coaches, spectators, and players will be watching you from the moment you arrive.
- Discuss teamwork, including key signals, eye contact, and opportunities to support each other in situations of set plays, setting walls, encroachment on PKs and free kicks, etc.
- Clarify any key league or tournament rules that are not standard (substitution procedures, forfeits, overtime, etc).
- Share your preferences for managing players, coaches, and spectators.
- Discuss expectations on fouls and misconduct, especially for situations in and close to the Penalty Area.
- Review or highlight AR responsibilities, including bench management, injury management, offside communication, and substitution procedures.
- Discuss what you as the referee are working to improve.
- Be friendly and introduce yourself to the coaches and captains. If working MSI and CYO games, you are required to have a Team Sportsmanship Liaison at the coin toss as well.
AR-Tip: If you are not the center referee, ask questions to clarify or better understand how he or she would like you to help.
